I had an open RNY April 15, 2002. RNY is an official term for one type of Weight Loss Surgery (WLS).

I consider this my re-birth day. I'm spending the rest of my life looking after myself and helping others to have what I have found. I thank God every day for my transformation and will live the rest of my life in gratitude.

Before (like a rock)
After (mini-me)
For anyone in the Toronto area, who would like a refferal to my trainer, nutritionist, I highly recommend Mike, who's been a constant inspiration. He can be reached at mspanogiannis@aol.com

My life is a journey and I will be a work in progress till the day I die. Most important change? Life is easier when you lose weight. This doesn't mean that there are no more problems (or challenges, as they are now called), but you can handle it all when routine things like looking after your hygiene and just being able to walk are not a major struggle. You may even have more problems, new problems, or different problems. The thing is, I find it all less overwhelming than before. So will you.
The hardest change? Doing the brain "surgery" necessary to match the physical change.

WLS is only a tool. You have to do your own mental catch-up. But this is the best part, because you are worth the effort. You have to do it for yourself. The people who truly love you will love you no matter what package you come in. Don't do it for them. Do it for yourself and spend the rest of your life respecting the life you have been given and loving yourself. Show yourself the love and respect you only saved for others until now. Not instead of loving and respecting others, but in addition to that. Learn to be your own best friend.

Anyway, I could go on forever, but for all you pre-ops, let me just say that I remember your feelings of fear and doubt and guilt and shame. In my case, WLS was a helping hand up. It helped me leave the land of the living dead that I dwelled in and come up to the land of the living. As dramatic as that sounds, words cannot fully express how I feel. The truth is even more dramatic.

Enjoy the journey and remember that every day will be better than the one before. Do something good for yourself. You're definitely worth it. God brought you here. Love and respect to all on this path. You are all in my daily prayers.
